2 minutesI was in Berlin for four days last week. And I only took a point and shoot digital camera with me. So this episode covers quick editing of holiday pictures, done in two minutes.

In this short time one can only do the basic stuff. And so I give you some easy recipes for getting more out of your snapshots. If you take this small amount of time, your images will get a lot better.

  • Rotate them, so that they are level
  • Adjust the perspective to get these falling lines out
  • Find a good crop
  • Adjust the contrast with the curves tool, applying an S-curve helps in most cases
  • Double the layer and use a layer mask to apply your edits only to a part of the image. Get more light into a dark corner or dim down a bright spot
  • Double the layer and use overlay or screen mode to change the overall contrast in an image. Use the opacity slider to adjust the strength of this effect. Try other modes, sometimes they work really good.

Don’t forget the challenge! Make a monochrome image and post it in our meetthegimp.org photogroup at 23 and be sure to use the tag “mtg-monochrome”. The challenge ends March 31 1600GMT and I’ll draw a winner by random choice.

Episode 017: Selecting Selections Part 1

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

icon for podpress  Podcast Video (59.6 MB) [35:14m]: Play in Popup | Download (9967)

Selections are widely used in Gimp. Select something to work only on that, to cut or copy it, to move it around…..

In this video I cover the basics of selections, the usage of the rectangle, elipse and free hand selection tool with all their options, the different selection modes (replacing, adding, substracting and intersecting) and the different keyboard shortcuts you can use. Yes, there is a difference between first pressing shift and then the mouse or the other way around.

Finally I show you how to work with the Quickmask to make finetunings to your selection and how to save a selection for later use in a channel.

The sound quality got lost somewhere in the production chain. And I have no time to fix it because I have to finish the schedule for my school first. Next week with better sound….

In this episode I answer a some questions that came up in the last weeks. I discover the colour sample points, explain the colour picker a bit more in depth and give some pointers to ressources about the Gimp.

I promised some links:

Gimpusers - a very informative site about the Gimp.

Akkana Peck’s good book “Beginning GIMP: From Novice to Professional” beginninggimp-wilber.jpg on her site. The book is sold without Wilber on top! ;-) With this Amazon link you can buy it and increase her share on the price.

The Linux User mailing list. Subscribe to it - there is a lot of valuable information and only little noise.

The photocast_network_button_120.gif homepage, where you can also find the Focus Ring podcast.

This hasn’t made the podcast:

Meet the GIMP! is now listed in iTunes and Podcast Alley. If you like the show please let the people there know. ;-)

In todays show I cover the curves tool. With curves you can change the brightnes and contrast of an image in a lot of ways. Either finetune the shadows, midtones and highlights or do something very strange as in this picture.

Curves applied

This picture was made by Andra Sommer-Steinort for a workshop we both attend at the moment.
