Show your GIMP skills to the PS crowd!

Over at the Digital Photograpy School is a nice challenge. Peter Carey put one of his images under CC license (the image on the right is a crop out of his final version), provided the RAW file and asks his readers to put their versions into the comments.

Some interesting versions are there already – done with “The Other Program”. Let’s show them what we can do!

(The image was shot with a Canon “eos rebel t1i” or  “500D” – you may need that information for finding a colour profile for the RAW import.)

Rolf- The link download is a .CR2 file. It does not open in UFRAW or any of my other Ubuntu software. Can you help?

  2. Norman

I haven’t tried yet but does it open in Rawtherapee?

  3. Bert

    Yes, it does.

Which version of UFRaw did you use? Current 0.17 development version opens it just fine.

  5. Rolf

My UFRaw (Karmic Koala standard) gave me a pink image. I’ll install theone out of Pascal deBruins ppa tomorrow and try it again.

Pink preview is the standard way of UFRaw saying: “I don’t know this camera yet.”
So newer versions are likely to support this file…

    Learned something new today… :-)

I had a go at this but their website seems to be moderated so who knows if it will turn up.

    Hi,

strange with the pink, yes…. but it would be a better idea to not use color to show that the camera is unknown…
…you could not distinguish a pink pic from a opic of unknwown camera.

BTW: with Ubuntu–linux, if directly clicked on the *-CR2 with the filebrowser, the pic will be displayed with quite good colors. :) … it’s done automatically with the help of the f-spot viewer.

Ufraw does not read the file. I have Ubuntu 8.10 because of driver problems so can I get a newer version?

  11. Rolf

Have a look at getdeb.net – it may work. Or you have to compile yourself.

  12. Sebastian

getdeb.net only has for Ubuntu 9.04 and later. Older Ufraw is to old. I do not know how to compile. I have not done this ever. I know only it can destroy anything.

8.10 is a problem. Too many libs are just too old now, to get current UFRaw and its dependencies compiled properly. Can’t you update at least to 9.04?
