Also (am I posting too much?) a couple tips for using the paths tool:

1) to get a symmetrical curve, you need to make the handles for two adjoining nodes parallel. If they come straight away from the segment (i.e. perpendicular), and are the same length, you get a nice semi-circular curve.
2) As you explain in the episode, holding shift while dragging a handle makes it's mirror handle symmetrical so the curve is smooth. But you can add fine tuning by changing the LENGTH of the handle. As long as the ANGLE is the same as its partner, the curve will remain smooth, but one side will be shallower than the other.
3) When stroking paths that contain sharp angles, don't forget the thickness of the line when setting up your path. A sharp angle's vertex will jut out significantly past a similarly lined-up straight line. You can see this happen in the first shape I draw in my ambigram video.
4) You can join two nodes temporarily to move several disconnected paths at once, then remove the joining segments when placed.
5) Stroking along paths using different brushes or lines thicknesses and colours, each on thier own layer, can be used to make some excellent lighting/shadow effects. And because you are simply stroking over a path, it is fairly non-destructive, so... experiment!

To see more of my work, click my name above to view my photobucket account. I have been doing thewse for a while, and I learn as I go, so they vary in quality. I do have a few I am really proud of, though.

P.S. Bert (or anyone else), I design these for fun, so if you would like me to do one for you, let me know. Forums are probably best, as I check the blog only occasionally.

No, Rolf - I was actually really pleased with how well it translated in that format. And I am glad folks are taking a look at the process - I find it interesting, and it is nice to know I am not the only one.

My content aside, that was one of my favourite episodes to date. Thanks for letting me get involved!

@Tobias: Oh, yes, I forgot that.

@w_nightshade: I hope you are not too mad about me because your video is reduced to an intermezzo. (But your pachkage has been downloaded 50x already.)

Maybe a little hint relating the path tool: When selecting an object in design-mode, just hold (beginning from second node) the left mouse button pressed between adding nodes (while following the desired form with mouse pointer). This generates corresponding Bezier-handles automatically (so you need the edit mode less often).

You can see a similar technique with Photoshop's pen-tool (found no GIMP counterpart ;-) in the following video (start at 1:20): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zn2JZMG2t1Y

I really wish I could have gotten some audio to you for that video, but I am really looking forward to watching this episode - -I have it queued up on my iPod, ready for my commute home (train, not car - that would be dangerous!).
