Someone in Russia with the IP 23.142.32.11 is constantly downloading this file. More than 10000 times today. :-( I have pulled the video off the server until the situation returns to normal. PLEASE KEEP AN EYE AT YOUR DOWNLOAD DAEMONS! (Download Master in this case).

In this first Epsiode of the second year of Meet the GiMP! I return to Cakovec, Croatia with an image from the old castle. For celebrations I made a double length show. ;-) And to celebrate the Croatian style weather here (30+C), I had the windows open and you get some street noises. Our weather is mostly so cold that only bigger shops have an AC.

Before Croatia there is an update on the Old Ink Challenge from the last show. You can download the new set of images and try your knowledge of GiMP (or any other free software program) on that. Please send the results to info@meetthegimp.org.

Of course the new Forum gets a place too in this show. Have a look!

Then I reveal the secret of painting without gaps or overlaps - to answer a question from Luis in Buenos Aires.

In Cakovec I take you with me while I shoot the image to postprocess and tell you a secret of a lot of better photographers than me: MOVE!

The postprocessing involves mostly stuff I had already covered. New is an enhancement of the sky with a masked layer in multiply mode.

A team of highly trained Penguins in the MTG-Labs invented a new TLA, the TOC. And here it is:

The Old Ink Challenge 0:40
The new forum 7:00
Painting without overlap or gaps 10:50
How to shoot a castle 15:20
Postprocessing the castle image 18:20
Rotate 18:50
Crop 20:30
Clone a powerline out 24:20
Boosting the colours with curves 31:10
Enhance the sky with a masked layer in multiply mode 33:00

Now you can skip the parts of the video you don’t like.

Edit: With an audience like you a podcaster can be lazy:

Episode 54 illustrates a behavior of Gimp that has puzzled me for some time.
At 34:55, when you switch to the channels display, all channels show not only active (the eye), but selected (background color highlighted).

In the following there is a minor edit-discontinuity, which probably skips some periods when you were clicking on the channel background bars, but when you return to channels at 35:14, all the channel bars have a white background.

I discovered that that background toggles between white and colored when you click on the bar someplace other than on the eye-icon, but I never noticed that the “selected” state actually affected anything! I believe it may just be a curiosity, but perhaps someone else knows something about it.

Not that I’ve pointed it out, it will, of course, distract you everytime you use channels. :-)

    OK,I take it back — I was confused. :-[
Deselecting a channel seems to protect it from edit changes.

    Note to self:
    visible is one thing
    editable is a different thing.

  4. I liked especially the part about framing the image. I never can make up my mind whether to let features like a wall or fence continue out of the picture or to include something like a corner as you did.

What is the deadline for the challenge?

  5. Rolf says:

No prices - no deadline. ;-)

eBernd has tackled No. 9 - looks quite good for beginning.

Is there something not quite right with the file format of episode 54? In my usual browser (Opera) when I point at the link for it, it shows http://meetthegimp.org/podpress_trac/web/257/0/meetthegimp054.mp4 in the status bar, but when I download it, it downloads as meetthegimp054.mp3. I downloaded it with and changed the file name to have MP4 as the file extension, and then it played OK, but something is odd.

In Firefox, it shows the same in the status bar as it did with Opera, saving it saves it as meetthegimp054.mp4, but the save as file type box says the format is MP3 format sound.

I checked and I don’t see the same behaviour with earlier episodes, so I think it is something to do with your file, not my set-up.

  7. Rolf says:

This is strange - I have changed nothing in my tool chain.

Sorry, the next episode alse claims to be a MP3 file. Tips anyone?

  8. Ian Wilson says:

Yes episode 55 came as MP3 too. As a workaround, I simply changed the name to MP4 and it then played OK.

  9. Rolf says:

It is an mp4 on the server. “file” gives me “MP4″ as the filetype. Very confusing.
