Episode 022: The Secrets of the Unsharp Mask
This week I go out of my comfort zone and cover the Unsharp Mask. I never found time to get into that thing. Black Art I thought - and well, it is a bit.
But I had a good guide, Joel’s Blog told me everything I needed to know. So this show is basically a blatant rip off. 
This is my first image I have ever tried USM on. Works quite good - it will not be the last. But I think this crop is way better:

I have used the unsharp thing all the time….. with mask tools it gives a better control for the sharpness in your images…..
so you can sharpen the area of interess without viewing the entire image and then set the mask to exclude the oversharpened area……..
I used windows and photoshop for some time and this unsharp thing was never a blur thing…. ok the name is really “doof” (silly) it’s a tool to make areas sharp……
I’m really happy, that you covered this thing a little bit in the show, so it’s not more “dark magic” for everyone……

Rolf, It could just be me but I’m not sure that you have posted the finished article.
in the version I have, via miro, you make show prompts in gedit, your wife (or mum
) comes in and seems to offer you a meal, 10 seconds before it ends you state “well i think I’m ready to start recording now!”
Unusual format to say the least.

Photoshop does the same but doesn’t advertise it in the status bar.
- copy the layer
- invert it
- blur it
- combine with original layer
In the darkeoom you make a thin (underexposed) contact copy of your negative. You blur it by putting a glass plate between the film and the negative. And then you sandwich both pieces of film in the enlarger - that takes a lot of training and time…. - and make your print.
The name is a correct description of the process - but not very helpful for the novice.

The humor was refreshing for such a tough subject. I liked the creative approach to screencasts. You mentioned a different recording software, what did you use this time?

Well, podcasting is always a bit like talking to oneself. I sit in front of the mic and talk - no one opposite. I am used to kids not listening to me - but I needed at least 15 shows to get comfortable with it.
But I got so much nice reactions by you - now I can talk free into the elektronic void.
