CinePaint 0.23

CinePaint has already been mentioned on this blog by some readers as an alternative to GIMP, especially if one wishes to handle 16 bits pictures. Today it was mentioned on its homepage that version 0.23 has been released for MacIntel and Fedora. There is however no mention of 0.23 sources or release notes. It is a bit confusing and I am under the impression that a CVS version has been used for these releases. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile for those concerned to check it out on SourceForge.

You’re right. There should be 0.23 release notes. Will try to fix that.

It’s a bit messy because the 0.23 releases are based on new build systems we’re creating. For now we’re operating under the “release early” paradigm.

Our Mac packaging works correctly (that is, is a Mac disk image) for the first time ever. That we have a Mac-native release, without X11, is pretty cool. The 0.23 rpm is a bleeding edge version for folks who want the latest without building from source. We have debs, too. The official distro packages aren’t as fresh.
