2.8 in Fall or Winter

There is a lot to do until then, too much to get finished in the planned half year interval. So don’t hold your breath and enjoy 2.6.x. Behind the link are some examples of GEGL effects.

And consider to help in developing or donate to speed things up!

Wow, something to look forward to :-)

Is there any way of making a seemingly simple feature request? I guess Sven Neumann and the other developers have their hands full though. It would, however, be a help to beginners like myself, if one could easily change the language of GIMP’s user interface, e.g. in the menu or some other easy way.

Perhaps this is already possible and I’m overlooking something? I’ve already changed the language of my UI to English as most of the tutorials available online are in English like this great show MeetTheGimp. I am also considering buying the instructional DVD in German by Bernhard Stockmann that you, Rolf, presented in one of the latest shows. In that case changing to a German UI when watching the DVD would come in handy. When my wish first arose, I searched the net and was relieved to find the below procedure of changing the language settings in my Win XP operating system, so I could have an English UI, and of course I could do the same when I would like to change the UI to German. It does, however, come across as a rather “nerdy” way of performing a seemingly very simple task:

Control Panel/System/ Advanced/”Environment” button/ In “System Variables” area: “Add” button: Enter LANG for Name and fr or de… for Value.

    I found this procedure here:

Does anyone know of an easier way?

Greetings to everyone and thanks for a great show! :-)

Looking forward to seeing how 2.8 will be, hope there won’t be too many delays.

    Halfdan:
I’m not sure if this works in XP, but in Vista all I have to do is go to the “Regional and language”-settings in the control panel, and change the “Format” language there. When (re)starting Gimp, the UI language will have changed.

I found a screenshot with Google, so you can see how it looks.

    Hi Torbjorn,

    Thanks for the tip!

Yes it works in Win XP as well. However it also changes the language and the way time and date is displayed in the Win XP taskbar. The time here is now 5:41 PM, Sunday, May 24th, instead of 17:41, 24. maj. :-) That doesn’t matter much though, so I may very well be using your tip, when I want to change quickly back and forth between languages in GIMP.

Greetings from Denmark to Norway! ;-)

AFAIK GIMP takes the system language. When I want to start it in German, I run it from a terminal window and set the environment variable LANG for that process. But that’s under Linux……

When I used the Gimp in Windows (at least until 2.6.0) the way I changed the UI language was to find where the regional libraries of Gimp or Gtk (I don’t remember but should be easy to find out) were kept and manually delete the languages I didn’t want. That procedure worked also for Inkscape, Pidgin and any other Gtk app ported to Windows. YMMV but I think it’s more convenient than changing the system locale.
    cheers

You can set the environment variable LANG even in Windows. I would create a simple .bat file with:

    set LANG=en
    start gimp-2.6.exe

Add the Batch file to the start menu and you can start Gimp in both languages.

I’m not really disappointed when i hear that a software will need longer than expected. good things need time. so i look forward to get a good gimp 2.8 when it’s ready. and not a bad or uncomplete version after a half year. the gimp developers do a good job, and that of course needs time.

    Rolf, gagrilli and Tobias,

    Thanks for your suggestions!

Tobias: I was just about to write that I had already tried the batch file on an earlier occasion and that I couldn’t get it to work, as the file or command couldn’t find the path to GIMP. It then occurred to me, to place the .bat file itself in GIMP’s “bin” folder with a shortcut on the desktop and voilá – it worked!! :-) Most of the tutorials I found on creating the .bat file fail to mention that the file must be saved in GIMP’s “bin” folder. That’s quite an important piece of information for a computer novice like me, who doesn’t really know what a .bat-file is. ;-) The tutorials often mention creating a shortcut on the desktop, which made me wonder where they saved the file.

As you also seemed to have success with the .bat-file Tobias, I decided to give it one last try, and boy am I glad I did – thanks for providing the motivation for that final home run! ;-) It’s still a bit of a “nerdy” solution, but once you do it right it works like a charm. :-)

Sorry if I’ve diverted this thread from it’s original purpose, but I’m grateful for all of your help!

    Thanks!
